Stowelink’s Founder Ogweno Stephen Interviewed by BRICS Media on the State of NCDs in Africa

Recently, Stowelink’s founder, Ogweno Stephen, was interviewed by BRICS Media on the critical issue of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Africa and the potential solutions to this growing continental challenge. The interview, conducted by Sir Kenneth Omondi of BRICS Media, provided a comprehensive overview of the rising NCDs burden in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Rise of NCDs in Sub-Saharan Africa

During the interview, Ogweno highlighted the alarming increase in NCDs across sub-Saharan Africa, contributing to a dual health burden alongside infectious diseases. He noted that conditions such as obesity, diabetes, stroke, and cancer are becoming more prevalent, even in rural areas. Unfortunately, these conditions are often surrounded by myths, misconceptions, and are sometimes attributed to witchcraft, complicating efforts to address them effectively.

Addressing Misconceptions and Myths

Ogwaeno emphasized the need to dispel myths and provide accurate information about NCDs. He stressed that understanding the true causes and risk factors of these diseases is crucial in combating their spread and improving public health outcomes.

Solutions to the NCDs Challenge

Ogwaeno proposed several practical solutions for individuals to mitigate the risk of NCDs. These include:

  • Lifestyle Modifications: Adopting healthier nutrition, increasing physical exercise, avoiding tobacco and alcohol use, and managing indoor pollution are key steps individuals can take to reduce their risk of NCDs.
  • Government Action: Governments play a crucial role in combating NCDs through policy implementation. Ogwaeno called for:
    • Regulation of trans fats.
    • Increased taxation on tobacco and alcohol products.
    • Creation of livable spaces with designated areas for physical activity.
    • Increased funding for public health initiatives, diagnosis, and disease management.

The Role of Public Health Policy

In the interview, Ogwaeno also discussed the importance of robust public health policies. He urged governments to prioritize health policy reforms that can significantly impact NCD prevention and control. This includes policies aimed at regulating unhealthy products and promoting environments that encourage healthy living.

The Path Forward

The interview concluded with a call to action for both individuals and governments to take proactive measures in addressing the NCDs crisis. Ogwaeno reiterated the importance of a collective effort to tackle this issue and improve health outcomes across Africa.
