Stowelink Foundation was honored to participate in the Annual Membership Meeting organized by the NCD Alliance of Kenya (NCDAK). As one of the leading health advocacy organizations in Kenya, the NCDAK meeting provided a crucial platform for members to discuss the current state of non-communicable disease (NCD) advocacy, program implementation, and health policy in the country.
Membership and Progress Updates
The meeting began with a reflection on the progress made by NCDAK and its member organizations over the past year. Stowelink, among other members, shared insights into the programs that have been implemented to combat the rising cases of NCDs in Kenya. This exchange of experiences highlighted the collective impact made in areas like cardiovascular health, diabetes management, cancer awareness, and mental health advocacy. It was a valuable opportunity to learn from each other and identify areas that require additional focus.

Health Insurance Reform: NHIF to SHA
A significant topic of discussion during the meeting was Kenya’s recent transition from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the newly introduced Social Health Authority (SHA). Stowelink Foundation, along with other member organizations, weighed in on the potential implications of this shift, particularly in relation to access to healthcare services. While SHA promises a more streamlined and equitable approach to health coverage, members raised concerns over how effectively this new model will cater to the needs of individuals living with NCDs, many of whom require long-term and consistent access to treatment.
As an organization deeply involved in community health advocacy, Stowelink emphasized the need for continuous dialogue with the government and stakeholders to ensure that SHA lives up to its potential in providing universal healthcare. There was a consensus among members that proactive engagement with policymakers is crucial to ensure that the new health insurance framework addresses the unique challenges faced by NCD patients.
Strengthening Health Programs and Policy Advocacy
The most pressing part of the meeting was dedicated to planning the next steps for NCDAK members, with a focus on maximizing the impact of their work. Stowelink reaffirmed its commitment to scaling up community-level health programs, particularly in educating the public about non-communicable diseases and providing health screening and services.
Members also discussed strategies to strengthen their policy advocacy efforts. Given the rising burden of NCDs in Kenya, Stowelink and other organizations agreed that there is an urgent need to lobby for more supportive policies at both the national and county levels. This includes pushing for policies that promote preventive care, healthier lifestyles, and access to essential medications for those affected by NCDs.

Looking Ahead
As Stowelink continues its mission to address NCDs through community education, screening programs, and advocacy, participation in the NCDAK Annual Membership Meeting is a vital part of staying connected with the broader health advocacy ecosystem in Kenya. Moving forward, Stowelink looks forward to collaborating even more closely with NCDAK and other partners to drive meaningful change in healthcare access, policy reform, and public health outcomes for individuals living with NCDs.
We believe that by continuing to share knowledge, collaborate on programs, and advocate for policy reform, we can significantly reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases in Kenya and beyond.
Stay tuned for updates on our ongoing programs and advocacy efforts!
