Stowelink’s Work on Digital Advocacy on Transfats with IILA Presented at the Commonwealth Nurses and Midwives Conference

On Day 2 of the Commonwealth Nurses and Midwives Conference, Stowelink Foundation, represented by Ogweno Stephen, made a significant presentation titled “Harnessing Social Media for Tackling Transfats: Advocacy Efforts and Implications on Cardiovascular Health.” This insightful presentation shed light on a crucial project that Stowelink implemented in collaboration with the International Institute of Legislative Affairs (IILA), which focused on digital advocacy and policy change regarding the use of industrial trans fats and their impact on public health.

The project aimed to raise awareness about the health risks associated with trans fats, which are directly linked to increased cardiovascular diseases and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Recognizing the wide reach and accessibility of social media platforms, the initiative utilized digital channels such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to disseminate educational content on the harmful effects of trans fats, reaching both the general public and key policymakers.

Through engaging and informative social media posts, infographics, and online discussions, Stowelink’s advocacy efforts were able to gain traction, spark conversations, and educate thousands about the dangers of trans fats. By integrating the digital campaign with direct policy advocacy spearheaded by IILA, the project managed to bridge the gap between public health education and legislative action. The campaign emphasized the need for stricter regulations and the elimination of industrial trans fats in processed foods—a critical step in curbing the rising rates of heart disease and related health issues in Kenya and across Africa.

During the conference, Ogweno Stephen highlighted the effectiveness of using social media as a tool for advocacy, especially when paired with strong partnerships with policy-oriented organizations like IILA. He discussed the powerful role of digital platforms in amplifying public health messages, engaging diverse audiences, and driving policy discussions, particularly on issues that directly impact community health.

The presentation at the Commonwealth Nurses and Midwives Conference was well received, with attendees acknowledging the importance of integrating social media in health advocacy, especially in the fast-evolving digital world. It also reaffirmed the crucial work being done by Stowelink in addressing health challenges at both the grassroots and policy levels.

Stowelink continues to push the boundaries of advocacy by blending innovative digital strategies with traditional policy efforts, showing that social media can be more than just a communication tool—it can be a powerful driver of change. The success of this trans fats project reinforces the foundation’s mission to improve health outcomes by tackling critical public health issues, raising awareness, and advocating for evidence-based policies that benefit the larger population.

As we move forward, Stowelink remains committed to leveraging digital platforms for impactful advocacy and driving forward the necessary conversations around health and policy reform. Keep following our work for more updates on how we are shaping the future of public health through innovation and advocacy.
