🏋️‍♂️ Is a Gym Membership Worth It? Here’s What Our Program Officer Learned on His Fitness Journey

A few years ago, our Program Officer Oduor Kevin found himself at a crossroads. He weighed 95 kilograms, felt constantly fatigued, and struggled with inconsistent fitness routines. Despite knowing the importance of physical activity—especially in preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs)—Kevin found it difficult to stay committed to home workouts. There was always something in the way: work, fatigue, or just life.

But then he made a decision that would change everything: he joined a gym.

The Turning Point

“At first, I wasn’t sure it was worth it,” Kevin admits. “Paying for a gym when I could technically work out for free didn’t seem like a smart move. But I realized I needed structure, accountability, and a consistent environment.”

Within just 45 days of consistent gym attendance, Kevin had lost 6 kilograms, felt more energetic, and started noticing a positive shift—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.

More Than Weight Loss

For Kevin, the gym became more than a place to work out. It offered a supportive community, discipline, and a sense of purpose. The shared space with others striving to better themselves kept him motivated and accountable.

“I didn’t just lose weight—I gained back control over my lifestyle,” he shares. “It boosted my confidence and gave me tools to stay active even when I couldn’t get to the gym.”

Fighting NCDs with Consistent Action

As a Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Advocate, Kevin understands the stakes. NCDs such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases are rising rapidly, especially among youth. Physical inactivity remains a key risk factor.

“Regular exercise is one of the most powerful tools we have for preventing NCDs. The gym helped me internalize that in a very personal way,” he says.

Through his journey, Kevin learned that investing in health today means avoiding preventable illness tomorrow. The cost of a gym membership, he says, is minimal compared to the cost of chronic disease.

A Message to Others

“So, is a gym membership worth it? For me, absolutely. It was an investment in my future—a healthier, happier, more energized version of myself.”

Today, Kevin shares his experience to inspire others, especially young people, to take charge of their health through regular physical activity. His story is a reminder that small, consistent actions can have life-changing impacts.
