Stowelink Foundation Joins Global Call to Recognize Obesity as a Health Priority in The Lancet

Stowelink Foundation is proud to celebrate a milestone contribution to global health discourse as Ogweno Stephen, representing the Foundation, co-authored his first paper in The Lancet—one of the world’s leading medical journals.

The article, developed in partnership with the World Obesity Federation, critiques the Lancet Commission’s “Global Health 2050” report for its limited attention to obesity, despite the condition’s growing global impact on economies and health systems.

Reframing Obesity as a Global Health Priority

The publication emphasizes that obesity is not merely a lifestyle issue, but a complex and multi-sectoral challenge that must be integrated into global and national health priorities. Current estimates indicate that obesity costs global economies between 2–3% of GDP, and by 2035, nine of the ten countries most affected will be in low- and middle-income countries.

These insights reinforce Stowelink Foundation’s ongoing advocacy for equitable, evidence-based, and preventive health strategies across Africa—particularly around NCDs such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

Championing African Leadership in Global Health

Through this publication, Stowelink Foundation continues its mission to elevate African perspectives and lived experience within global health policymaking. By integrating local insights with international research, the Foundation aims to advance people-centered health systems that prioritize prevention, inclusion, and youth participation.

This recognition marks a significant step in our continued work to challenge stigma, promote awareness, and strengthen multi-stakeholder action toward achieving health equity and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
