Series 18: The Role of Community in Sustaining Physical Activity

At Stowelink Foundation, we continue to explore innovative ways to promote healthy living and reduce the burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). In the 18th episode of our Physical Exercise and NCDs Series, we focus on an often-overlooked yet powerful driver of sustained physical activity β€” community.

Working out on your own can be difficult. Motivation fluctuates, and maintaining consistency can be a struggle. However, when individuals become part of a fitness community, everything changes. Community brings accountability, encouragement, and a shared sense of purpose that keeps people moving even when enthusiasm wanes.

Research supports this idea. A study published in the American Journal of Health Promotion found that people who receive social support from friends, family, or peers are significantly more likely to engage in regular physical activity. Whether it’s through running clubs, yoga classes, dance sessions, or virtual fitness groups, communities help make exercise more enjoyable and sustainable.

Building and nurturing fitness communities also contributes to broader public health goals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes that creating supportive environments is key to increasing physical activity and preventing NCDs. By working together, communities can inspire healthier lifestyles, promote inclusion, and drive collective progress toward improved wellbeing.

In this episode, we delve into the science behind the social aspect of exercise and share practical ways to harness community power to build healthier habits.
