Strengthening Tobacco Control: Stowelink Participates in Kenya TIM Team’s First Meeting of 2026

Monitoring Tobacco Industry Interference in Kenya

The Kenya Tobacco Industry Monitoring Team convened its first meeting of 2026 to review progress in documenting and responding to tobacco industry interference across the country. The meeting brought together civil society organizations, researchers, and policy advocates who are working collectively to safeguard Kenya’s tobacco control policies from commercial influence.

Stowelink Foundation was represented at the meeting by Oduor Kevin and Oduor Stephen, who shared insights from the organization’s ongoing work to monitor and expose tobacco industry tactics targeting young people and policymakers.

The meeting provided an opportunity to assess key developments from the previous year and align strategic priorities for strengthening tobacco industry monitoring efforts in 2026.

New Research Highlights Digital Marketing Tactics

One of the major highlights of the meeting was the presentation of findings from a study titled “Tobacco Industry and Its Influencers’ Use of Social Media Platforms in Marketing Tobacco and Nicotine Products in Kenya.” The study was led by Dr. Nyambura Salome of Kenyatta University and Winnie Ivayo of DevHub.

The research revealed how tobacco and nicotine brands increasingly use digital platforms and social media influencers to promote products to young audiences. These findings reinforce the urgent need for stronger digital monitoring systems and more effective enforcement of tobacco control policies.

Participants also reviewed documented cases of tobacco industry interference from 2025 and discussed ways to strengthen systematic tracking and rapid response strategies.

Stowelink’s Contribution to Monitoring and Public Awareness

Stowelink has been actively involved in initiatives that expose tobacco industry tactics and protect public health policy from commercial influence. The organization played a key role in the Unmask the Tactics KE campaign, which aimed to reveal how the tobacco industry uses misleading messaging and youth focused marketing strategies to normalize nicotine products.

Through digital advocacy campaigns and research based communication strategies, Stowelink has helped raise awareness about industry interference while promoting stronger accountability in tobacco governance.

As part of the broader monitoring ecosystem, Stowelink continues to support efforts that document industry activities, strengthen evidence based advocacy, and empower young people to challenge harmful narratives around tobacco use.
