SUMMARY HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE WHO INFORMAL CONSULTATION ON NCDS HELD ON DEC 9-11

Having attended the who informal consultation meeting here are a few key takeaways from the consultation

WE HAVE A FIGHT AHEAD OF US

As articulated by @MikkelsenBente_ NCDS now contribute to 7 out of the 10 leading killer diseases as opposed to 4 out of 10 which was just 20 years ago. The fight to beat NCDs needs immediate increased priority and action from all stakeholders

STORIES ARE A POWERFUL TOOL

we were reminded by @johanna_ralston that PEOPLE are important and that STORIES are a critical tool to really drive the NCDs advocacy and messaging. Stories create a personal connection to the figures so that behind the figures, it’s people first!

YOUTH ARE AT THE CENTRE OF MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH NCDS

As the answers kept streaming in on the question of what comes in mind when you hear meaningful engagement, YOUTH was a key pointer. We as the young people need to be active in the NCDS ACTION PLAN

ACTIONS SHOULD BE PRINCIPLE-BASED TO ENSURE THE MEANINGFUL PARTICIPATION OF PLWNCDS.

High-level recommendations, the WHO tools and guidance need to be translated into local grassroots-level action in countries. We need more data. If we want to push for policies that include PLWNCDs, they need to be supported by the best available evidence. We need better data on multi-morbidities, so we can understand what people living with multiple NCDs are facing.

WE NEED TO FIND A COMMON DENOMINATOR TO BREAK DOWN THE SILOS. THE COMMUNITY HAS BEEN FRAGMENTED; THE COMMON AGENDA IS NEEDED.

Stronger connection between the risk factors, prevention and care is needed. We need to be the voices for the healthy environment for all. We need to have a strong voice to counter the power of corporations who are really driving the risk factors for NCDs. We really need to take care of the root causes. We talk about the risk factors in complete isolation from the people with lived experiences. This has to change. This will help us to better understand the trajectory of the diseases and give us the tools to prevent them.

NCDs need action now and this was just but a beginning of a new energy in the NCDs movement.

Lets change lives

Let’s save lives
