Representatives from Stowelink that is our Chief Executive Officer and Chief Programs Officer, Ogweno Stephen and Oduor Kevin respectively, had the privilege of joining over 500 participants from 55 countries who attended the 7th Global Alcohol Policy Conference (GAPC).

The conference was hosted by the Global Alcohol Policy Alliance (GAPA) together with its partners in Cape Town, South Africa. It was the leading forum for the world’s alcohol policy makers, advocates, researchers, civil society activists, and practitioners. The gathering, under the unique theme of “Investing in people before profits: building momentum towards the Framework Convention on Alcohol Control”.

The 2023 GAPC provided a rich platform for delegates to share insights into alcohol policies and interventions implemented in their respective countries. From successful alcohol initiatives in Lithuania to ongoing challenges brought about by industry interference, the diversity of global perspectives highlighted the need for a nuanced and adaptable approach to alcohol regulation.

Discussions delved deep into the public health impact of alcohol consumption, emphasizing the role of evidence-based policies in mitigating harm. Experts presented compelling research on the links between alcohol and various health issues, reinforcing the urgency of prioritizing public health in policy development.
From community-based programs to technological advancements, the conference highlighted the importance of embracing a diverse range of strategies to tackle this complex global alcohol challenge.

We are glad to have been represented in discussions surrounding alcohol policy. Excess alcohol use is one of the risk factors for non-communicable diseases. Policies to regulate the use of alcohol will play a key role in the prevention of Chronic diseases!
