World Heart Day 2024: Stowelink’s Heart Health Screening Success

On World Heart Day 2024, Stowelink, in partnership with the Kenya Cardiac Society, Doctors for Healthy Living, Kenya Medical Association, Ministry of Health Kenya and Crown Healthcare, held a highly successful heart health screening event at the University of Nairobi’s Kenya Science Campus. The initiative was part of the global movement to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and encourage preventive measures in line with this year’s theme: “Use Heart for Action.”

The Importance of Health Screenings

Cardiovascular diseases remain the world’s leading cause of death, responsible for over 20.5 million deaths annually. In Kenya, the burden of CVDs is rising due to lifestyle changes, with high blood pressure being one of the major risk factors. Many people remain unaware of their condition, which is why early detection and regular screenings are vital for preventing heart disease.

Through the World Heart Day Health Screening, we aimed to give individuals the opportunity to understand their heart health status and learn more about the steps they can take to prevent heart-related complications.

What We Screened For

Participants were able to take advantage of free screenings for key health indicators that play a significant role in maintaining heart health:

  • Blood Pressure: Monitoring blood pressure is critical for detecting hypertension, one of the leading causes of heart disease.
  • Blood Sugar Levels: High blood sugar can be an early sign of diabetes, which increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
  • Weight and Waist Circumference: Obesity and abdominal fat are closely linked to heart disease, making these measurements important markers for risk.

With approximately 200 individuals screened, our team was able to identify those who might be at risk and provide immediate advice on lifestyle adjustments. Those with elevated blood pressure were referred for further medical evaluation, ensuring they receive the care they need.

The Impact

The screening not only provided immediate health checks but also opened up conversations about heart health and how small, daily changes can lead to long-term benefits. Participants learned about the importance of regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and stress management in maintaining a healthy heart. Health professionals from Kenya Cardiac Society were on hand to share insights on how to adopt heart-healthy lifestyles.

More Than Just Screenings

The World Heart Day 2024 Health Screening was part of a larger celebration that included other impactful events. The Heart Walk, with over 200 participants, raised awareness about heart health while promoting physical activity. Additionally, the Cardiac Cup Football Tournament brought together various teams to showcase the importance of exercise in preventing heart disease. Family-friendly games and activities also created a fun atmosphere, highlighting that staying active can be enjoyable for all ages.

Take Action for Your Heart

We encourage everyone to prioritize their heart health. Whether it’s through regular check-ups, staying active, or eating a heart-healthy diet, there’s always something you can do to protect your heart. And remember, knowing your health numbers is the first step toward preventing cardiovascular disease.
