NCDS LABS FIRST CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Background of the NCDs labs and the next generation

NCDs globally result in 40 million deaths each year, many of which are preventable. Children and youth, especially, suffer from the wide casted impacts of NCDs, and do not have access to appropriate treatment, causing preventable inequalities which leads to increases of morbidity and mortality for our next generation. Since the majority of NCD-related risk factor behaviors influence premature death by the first two decades of life, effective prevention strategies focusing on children and adolescents are needed in order to curb bad behaviors and shape health habits in the environment in which they live and grow.

As young people play a critical role as agents of change in the global NCD landscape, it is important to note that young people should not only be beneficiaries or stakeholders, but should also be centrally involved as the co-creators, designers and implementers of the global action for the prevention and control of NCDs. The inclusion of young peoples’ needs in health systems and youth engagement in national, regional and global policy discussions has been an important part of advocating for the issues relating to young people and NCDs and can set the standard for policy processes.

The vision for the NCD Labs NCDs and the Next Generation stream is to promote and advance participation of young people in the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases locally, nationally, regionally and globally, engaging the next generation in discussions and actions that promote innovative solutions to the challenge of NCDs. The NCD Lab offers an opportunity for innovative approaches and initiatives at community, national, regional and global levels to be implemented toward the attainment of the global NCD targets and prioritizes tangible investments by young people in strengthening health systems for the prevention and control of NCDs.
